The Major -- Five Options 

Psychology is a broad discipline ranging in focus from the study of the brain, behavior, cognitive functions, social functions, and mental health issues. Since the field is so diverse, and based on our students' varying interests, we have developed five different tracks for the psychology major:

       General Psychology Option

       Clinical/Counseling Psychology Option

       Experimental Psychology Option

       Business/Industry Option

       Child Psychology Option


The Minor

Students who have an interest in psychology but would prefer to adapt their study as a complement to another major may choose a minor in psychology. The following list indicates requirements for a psychology minor (*total credit hours needed=24):

     Required Core:
         PSYC 101 Introduction to Psychology
         PSYC 220 Psychological Methods and Statistics

     Content Group I (one course)
         PSYC 251 Principles of Learning & Behavior Modification
         PSYC 311 Sensation and Perception
         PSYC 330 Neuropsychology
         PSYC 332 Cognitive Processes

     Content Group II (one course)
         PSYC 261 Cognitive Development
         PSYC 262 Social Development
         PSYC 272 Adult Development & Aging
         PSYC 282 Social Psychology
         PSYC 341 Theories of Personality
         PSYC 342 Abnormal Psychology

     Electives in Psychology (eight credits required)

*Note: eight hours must be at the 300 or 400 level



Gerontology Program


Within the Psychology Division, we also support a major or minor in Gerontology. Students may choose to double-major in Psychology and Gerontology, or a combination of a major and minor may be chosen.
