Mission:

The Rural Justice Institute provides a strong academic program for students interested in pursuing a research or professional career in the field of criminal justice. Resources are made available to faculty and students for the development, implementation and analysis of research projects. Community service to the communities in the Western New York region is a priority. All areas of the justice field are studied with special emphasis on the issues that emerge in rural areas.

Program Description:

The Rural Justice Institute at Alfred University utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of crime and justice in rural areas. Faculty and students share perspectives, information and resources to collaborate on many research projects involving varied crime and justice issues but with a unique interest in the issues associate with rural crime and justice. Faculty in the program define themselves as educators with a background in the fields of sociology, psychology, political science, criminology, communications and counseling. Faculty are committed to providing guidance for students involved in experiential education represented by such experiences as field trips, fieldwork, independent studies, and research projects. It is not unusual for students to be members of very active teams of researchers. Student collaboration with faculty has produced research that has been reported at numerous regional and national meetings. Student research is supported by grants, special divisional allocations, the Dean's special allocation, and ARGUS. Students majoring in disciplines represented in the Institute pursue jobs as professional criminal justice personnel and graduate studies at many excellent research institutions.
